Here are the correct answers for today’s Testy Tuesday Quiz:

QUESTION 1

It must be 25ml and must be measured with a Tot Measure

The word “shot”, meaning a drink of alcohol, has been used since at least the 17th century, while reference to a shot specifically as a small drink of spirits is known in the U.S. since at least the 1920s. The phrase “shot glass” has been in use since at least the 1940s.

There are two theories as to why a shot is called a shot. One is that it was inspired by the Old West where cowboys paid for their whiskey by trading for bullets. Another theory is that “shots” were named after Friedrich Otto Schott, a man who started a glassworks factory that made shot glasses in America.

QUESTION 2

ABV or Alcohol by volume is the correct answer

When it comes to measuring how much alcohol is in a beverage, you’ll need to multiply a drink’s ABV by the drink’s total volume. For example, a 330ml can of beer with 5% ABV contains 17ml of alcohol. Conversely, a 150ml glass of 12% ABV wine contains 18 ml of alcohol. To figure out the total amount of alcohol in a standard alcoholic beverage like wine or beer the formula should read:

ABV Percentage * Total Volume of Beverage = Total Alcohol in Beverage

Since higher ABV beverages will have more alcohol in them, they are often drunk in smaller serving sizes. This is why glasses of wine are usually drunk in smaller 150ml servings, while liquor is typically taken in smaller shots of around 37ml.

QUESTION 3
The maximum legal ABV by the SA Liquor Board for all spirits is 43%

QUESTION 4

They want a plain Whiskey (without any ice, water or a mixer)

Neat is the least confusing of cocktail terms. This means that a spirit is directly poured into a glass (preferably a Neat Glass). It’s similar to a shot, but the glass makes a huge difference in the sipping experience. Neat drinks are usually two shots (50ml), not chilled, there are no extra ingredients (even ice) and no, you can’t order an Irish Car Bomb neat. Brandy and whiskey are the most popular spirits to drink neat. High-quality spirits of any kind are commonly enjoyed neat as well.

QUESTION 5

Busnel is a Brandy

Rum is a liquor made by fermenting, then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. The distillate, a clear liquid, is usually aged in oak barrels. Most rums are produced in Caribbean and North and South American countries, but also in other sugar-producing countries, such as the Philippines, South Africa and Mauritius.
